The Venerable Archconfraternity of the Gonfalone of Saints Prisco and Agnello is one of the oldest and most significant faith associations of Sant’Agnello, deeply rooted in the religious and civil history of the community. Formally founded in 1642 as Monte di Pietà and Monte dei Morti, this archconfraternity has always carried out works of mercy, support for the poor and active participation in the main liturgical celebrations of the country.

Origins of the Archconfraternity of the Gonfalone

The archconfraternity was born in the area of the then municipality of Piano di Sorrento to combat usury and offer subsidized or free loans to the neediest. Already during the 18th century, after the purchase of land and the increase in the number of brothers, a chapel with burial was built inside the Church of Saints Prisco and Agnello, a place where spaces dedicated to the order still remain today.

In 1765, by royal will, the association was recognized with the title of archconfraternity, also equipping itself with a specific habit: a ceremonial robe with a black hood, used during the procession of the Dead Christ on Good Friday.

Easter traditions and processions in Sant'Agnello

During Holy Week, the Venerable Archconfraternity of the Gonfalone collaborates with other local associations in the transport of simulacra and in the processions that cross the streets of the town.

In particular, on Good Friday, the procession of the Dead Christ is one of the most solemn moments: the simulacrum of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows is moved from the Sanctuary of the SS. Annunziata at the parish church, followed by the brothers in habit and accompanied by the singing of the “Miserere“.

These celebrations represent not only an act of faith but also a cultural heritage that unites generations and strengthens the bond of the Sant’Agnello community with the Christian tradition.

Holy Week of the Archconfraternity of the Gonfalone

Participation in Holy Week in Sant’Agnello is an intense experience from a spiritual and cultural point of view. The presence of the Archconfraternity of the Banner of Saints Prisco and Agnello in liturgical processions, celebrations and moments of prayer testifies to the importance of the ancient brotherhoods in the preservation of local religious memory.

Their dress, venerated symbols and commitment to works of piety and charity make this association a pillar in the religious life of Sant’Agnello, especially on the occasion of the Easter rites and processions of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter celebrations
