CultureThe Confraternity of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Joseph is another glorious religious institution of Sant’Agnello (NA), also known as the Giuseppini Confraternity. Erected on 19 March 1873 by the will of Archbishop Monsignor Mariano Ricciardi, the brotherhood was ecclesiastically recognized in 1887 after a period of suspended activity.
Origin of Giuseppini
The brotherhood was born from the desire to promote devotion and piety towards the Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Joseph, devotees who included priests and lay people with objectives of faith and mutuality. After the canonical recognition obtained at the end of the nineteenth century, the members commonly called “Giuseppini“, resumed and consolidated their religious and social activity in the city fabric.
Traditions and procession of Giuseppini in Sant’Agnello
The Confraternity of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Joseph plays a significant role in the rites of Holy Week in Sant’Agnello. It is particularly linked to the Holy Thursday procession, in which the brothers participate wearing the characteristic white habit with purple mozzetta, and accompany the statue of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, a unique moment for its intense spiritual and meditative value.
This Sant’Agnello Easter procession introduces the liturgical events towards Good Friday, in an atmosphere of prayer and reflection.

Participation in the Holy Week processions with the Giuseppini Confraternity is a deeply felt experience at a community level. Their commitment is not limited to processions alone: the brothers are active in promoting popular piety, accompanying moments of prayer and safeguarding the religious traditions linked to Easter.
