Rione Maiano

The Rione Maiano is one of the most characteristic historic neighborhoods (rioni) of Sant’Agnello, perfect for those who want to discover the town’s most authentic and less touristy side. Located between the Church of San Giuseppe and Mariano Stinga Square – locally known as “La Pigna” – the rione stretches as far as the Church of San Rocco, preserving its popular traditions and the identity of the past.

Rione Maiano: between craftsmanship and tradition

The toponym “Maiano” probably dates back to the Latin Majus or Magius, believed to be the name of an ancient Roman landowner who had a villa in the area. This connection with the past is still reflected today in the architectural details and historical memory of the rione.

Rione Maiano:
The tradition of terracotta

Since ancient times, Rione Maiano has been known for its terracotta production, thanks to the natural presence of clay in the soil. Over the centuries, bricks, roof tiles, vases, braziers, and ovens were made here. From the 1960s onward, Maiano also became known for the artisanal construction of pizza ovens, now renowned throughout Italy and a symbol of local craftsmanship.

Places of worship and tradition

At the center of the rione are two particularly significant churches:

  • The Church of San Martino, built around 1600, can be reached via a picturesque staircase offering evocative views.

  • The Church of San Rocco, on the other hand, is the spiritual heart of the rione, especially during the summer patronal feast.

During this celebration, Maiano comes alive with the traditional Sagra della Polpetta di San Rocco, a festival deeply felt by the community and a chance to taste one of the symbolic dishes of the local cuisine.

Exploring Maiano on foot means immersing yourself in a timeless dimension. The rione is dotted with votive shrines, ancient stone portals, suspended arches and hidden alleys, offering a charming walk from the center of Sant’Agnello to the most intimate corners of the neighborhood. A place where every corner tells the story of daily life and the devotion of a community still deeply connected to its roots.
