Located in the historic center of Sant’Agnello, Piazza Matteotti is the town’s main square, overlooking the lively Corso Italia. This elegant public space is home to the Sant’Agnello Town Hall, serving as both the administrative core and a symbol of local identity and community pride.
History of Piazza Matteotti
The square was built in the early 20th century by filling in one of the ancient ravines that once crossed the Sorrentine Peninsula—specifically the one stretching from the Gulf of Pecoriello toward the center of town. Piazza Matteotti and the Town Hall building were designed by engineer Luigi Amalfi.
Initially intended to host the town’s classrooms, the building later became the official seat of the municipal offices. During the Fascist era (1927–1946), it even served as the Town Hall of the administrative district known as “Grande Sorrento.” Originally located on Via Angri, the municipal seat was moved here permanently.
Architecture and function
The Town Hall of Sant'Agnello is characterized by sober and balanced lines, with an orderly facade and the central portal surmounted by the city coat of arms. The windows directly overlook Corso Italia, while a small staircase leads to the internal atrium and the public offices. Inside, the City Council Hall stands out, where the political sessions and public meetings most relevant to the life of the community take place. This space bears witness to democratic confrontation and citizen participation, central elements for the administrative history of Sant'Agnello.

A Vibrant Public Space for Events and Culture
Throughout the year, Piazza Matteotti hosts cultural events, concerts, and vintage markets, attracting both locals and tourists. These activities animate the square and make it a dynamic space for gatherings and celebrations.
A Central Starting Point to Explore Sant’Agnello
Piazza Matteotti is also an ideal starting point for discovering the town. From here, visitors can easily reach major landmarks such as the Church of Saints Prisco and Agnello, the Marinella Terrace, historic neighborhoods, scenic villas, and other religious and cultural sites.
